Cleaning Routines
A manageable home starts with a cleaning routine that fits your time, energy, and space. Use these checklists as a starting point, then adjust them around your household. A small flat, a busy family kitchen, and a home with pets will each need a different rhythm.
Daily Cleaning: A Short Reset
Try attaching a few tasks to something you already do, such as finishing dinner. Aim for a short reset that leaves essential spaces ready to use.
- Wash dishes or load the dishwasher.
- Clean food preparation surfaces after use and deal with spills promptly.
- Sweep up crumbs where they collect.
- Put loose belongings back in their usual places.
- Check bins and empty them when needed.
If time is tight, prioritise food mess, dishes, and clear walkways. Leave less urgent jobs for another day.
Weekly Cleaning: Spread the Work
Choose one longer session or divide these jobs across the week. For example, tackle the bathroom on Tuesday and floors on Saturday. Adjust the frequency according to how quickly each area gets dirty.
- Clean the toilet, bathroom basin, bath, and shower.
- Dust accessible surfaces, working from higher shelves downwards.
- Vacuum carpets, rugs, and frequently used areas.
- Mop suitable hard floors using the recommended cleaning method.
- Wash bedding and towels, bringing washes forward when needed.
- Clean frequently touched handles and switches with a suitable product.
Clear just enough clutter to reach the surface you are cleaning. Sorting an entire cupboard can be a separate task.
Seasonal Cleaning: Choose One Larger Job
Use a change of season as a reminder to review less frequent jobs. Pick one task at a time and spread the work over several weeks.
- Clean accessible windows, frames, and sills.
- Vacuum beneath furniture you can safely move.
- Wash removable covers and curtains according to their care labels.
- Empty and wipe one cupboard or drawer before replacing its contents.
- Review appliance instructions and schedule any filter cleaning or replacement.
Keep Your Routine Easy to Restart
Use a short list and a small selection of products suited to your surfaces. Follow product labels; the CDC’s household cleaning guidance explains appropriate cleaning methods and when disinfection may be needed.
If you miss a day or a week, start with the next useful task. Your checklist can change as your household’s needs change.
